As a compromise, may I suggest that rather than continue battling with these, you instead take the time at the end of each chapter to write a summary explaining what you have learnt/discovered/etc as you progress through each stage of the novel.
If you decide to do this, ensure that you are taking the time to really reflect on what you have read and how it adds to the story's progression and ultimately, how it affects your journey as a reader.
